Damn these guys are old.
Escape Plan comes to us from Mikael Håfström a name that I wont even dare to try and pronounce, he directed films like The Rites , 1408 and Evil, among others, from what I can tell escape plan seems to deviate a bit from what he usually does but it wasn’t noticeable in the film, but lets get down to reason you all even thought about seeing this film, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone you can’t mention these two together without raising lot of eyes in your direction. So is this simple a retreat of expendables and a standard boring action movie or does it bring something new to the table ? Well a little bit of both is the appropriate answer.
Besides our big names stars this movie also stars 50 Cent who you might not know as held a somewhat firm career as a actor since 2005 with at least one movies every year, and also Jim Caviezel who plays the villain, Faran Tahir who plays what he always plays in any movie, Amy Ryan and Sam Neil so a fairly strong start lineup besides our two main leads and they hold the up the movie fairly well Jim Caviezel in particular really stood out as the villain how was actually intelligent for once and didn’t act like a complete idiot when our heroes came up with a decent plan, But who are our “Heroes” ?
Well our main guy is Stallone and before you think they are going to revolucionse everything by turning Stallone into a bad guy your not so lucky, Stallone works for a security corporation that works in prison security against escapes, they do this by sending in Stallone an escape artist and then patching up all the holes he used to escape, its a really interesting idea and they actually make it believable by asking the right questions and giving the appropriate answers, why does a guy want to spend most of his life in prison and risk his life this way ? well you’ll have to see the film to get those answers but I just say that I was satisfied, Stallone gets called for a new job inside a super prison supposedly developed by a government branch in some shadowy way, He reluctantly accepts and gets taken there and its immediately clear something weird is going on and even when Stallone states who he is the warden wont let him leave, on the inside he befriends Arnold Schwarzenegger character a prisoner who seems to know the location of a high risk target, and soon enough Stallone recruits his help to make their escape.
The plot is simple and it only gets more tricky when you try and find out who really runs this prison and why Stallone cant leave and all that but its easy to follow and the high point of the movie is Stallone interacting with Schwarzenegger it is hilarious and awesome especially with a fist fight that happens in the movie with them exchanging stupid insults back and forth, this is Arnold Schwarzenegger like we know him laughing and giving his red face yells and crazy stuff its awesome and if he seemed to have lost his touch a bit in some other movies he really shined on this film and it is sort of the sad fact about this film that the actors completely cary the whole thing, its not a bad idea by any means but if you were to cast anyone else I guarantee that score would be much lower than what it currently is.
Well the main actors obviously steal the show but I’m pleased to announce that the secondary actors also did their part well, 50 cent was pretty cool as a role that you wouldn’t expect him to play, as Stallone called him a “Techno thug” a expression i find way funnier than what it probably is, and Amy Ryan was alright, Samn Neil of course did a damn good job as the prison doctor and everyone in between also worked well in their roles even if they weren’t very demanding roles, the setting itself of this super prison does look really bad ass and inexplicable it’s scary to even imagine being in there.
Now it cant all be good now cant it ? Well in fact most of the problems I have with this film come down to the climax, the characters weren’t very deep but they were cool and had distinct personality’s and it was great seeing them interact off each other, but in the climax things take a turn towards expendables lane a bit, the special effects leave lot to be desired and look dated as hell, besides some cool scenes here and there its mainly a shoot out, and it even breaks the characters a bit since Stallone character is never built up to be good with guns or even to have killed anyone before yet he turns completely Rambo on everyone with no remorse at all, it was really weird but you still get some good Schwarzenegger action with a heavy machine gun and the in my opinion good twist at the end.
Overall escape plan is entertaining from beginning to end, it may be uninteresting for some people who are bent on seeing it simply as another action movie but i deem it a good action movie with enough fresh elements good humor and great actors to hold my interest for the full runtime without ever letting up, its a recommendation if your in the mood for a good popcorn flick(even if other reviewers clearly disagree).
